Holidays on Gold Hill, Shaftesbury in Dorset

Golden Hill, Shaftesbury. Photo: Guy Edwardes

Everyone knows Gold Hill, Shaftesbury in Dorset don't they? It's a picture that continues to grace the pages of everything from tourism brochures to the latest Classic FM CD. There's a particularly wonderful 2-page photo of a snow clad Gold Hill in the December issue of Countryfile taken by eminent landscape photographer Guy Edwardes. It seems that since it was first used for the now infamous Hovis Bread adverts in the 1970's, we can't get enough of this idyllic street.

What many people don't realise is that you can actually stay on Gold Hill. Updown Cottage is a 5-star gold award winning holiday cottage (to be honest, once inside, you'd want to stay there even if it sat on an industrial estate). It's slap in the middle of Gold Hill and as such tends to be one of the picturesque cottages that appears in most photos of the street (it's the white one with the greenery growing up the walls and nice shutters). So if ever you've hankered after a trip to Gold Hill - why not turn it into a short break or relaxing holiday?

We'd love to hear about other holiday cottages in famous or familiar landscapes - do share them with us.

  1. Why are the Hovis adverts now infamous? There's nothing wrong with them!
